Shakib frustrated with Bangladesh?s poor World T20 performance ? Cricket News Update

Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has expressed his frustration at the team?s insipid performance in their do-or-die ICC World Twenty20 match against Pakistan, which culminated in an 8-wicket defeat and led to their early exit from the competition, claiming it seemed Bangladesh ?were never in the game?.

?I didn't like the way we lost,? Shakib said while speaking to Bangladesh daily Prothom Alo. ?We should have been lively after scoring 175, saved around fifteen runs while fielding.?

He went on to point out that instead of putting in a spirited fielding effort, the team remained lacklustre, and displayed a disappointing lack of commitment. This included a general absence of energy and drive as fielders failed to dive for catches, and basic fielding errors, which Shakib claimed should have been common sense.

?These things annoy me because neither the captain nor I can tell this every ball,? he said. ?This is what I expected from the team when I was the captain and even now when I'm not the captain. If we had done everything properly and lost, I wouldn't have felt so bad.?

Bangladesh have put in disappointing performances in the past editions of the World T20 tournament ? having won their first match against the West Indies in the first match of the inaugural 2007-08 World T20, the Tigers have gone on to suffer 10 consecutive losses in the 4 editions of the tournament so far.

Their latest failed World T20 campaign came to an end after they crashed out of the tournament following their 8-wicket defeat at the hands of Pakistan. Placed in Group D in the first stage, alongside Pakistan and New Zealand, Bangladesh lost their first match against New Zealand by 59 runs, and the game against Pakistan saw the Tigers faced with the pressure of having to claim victory by a margin of 36 runs or more, in order to stay in the competition.

However, Bangladesh were unable to restrict the Pakistani batsmen, putting in a poor display with both bowling and fielding. They had previously had a good run with the bat, with Shakib Al Hasan top-scoring and registering the best T20I innings by a Bangladeshi batsman ? 84 off 54 ? which enabled the team to post a solid total of 175. However, they were unable to defend the score, and Shakib?s efforts eventually went in vain.

?From a personal point of view, I had a good day,? Shakib said. ?But the disappointment was to see the game being given away.??
