Nathan Norman signs baseball scholarship with LC

Credit: Parker Michels-Boyce/The News & Advance

Nathan Norman, a 5-year-old cancer patient?from Rustburg, signs to play baseball for Lynchburg College.

The Lynchburg College baseball program held a signing ceremony on Tuesday to welcome its newest prized recruit to the program: 5-year-old Nathan Norman.

Norman, who will turn 6 in December, isn?t your ordinary recruit. The young man has already demonstrated that he has a strength and determination far beyond that of the average ballplayer or human being.

Norman, whose family lives in Rustburg, was diagnosed with brain cancer on Jan. 9, 2009, and 11 days later, he had surgery that removed 55 percent of the tumor. The surgery and chemotherapy that lasted from March-August 2009 temporarily stopped the growth of the tumor until October 2011, when it was found the tumor was progressing again.

Doctors also discovered the growth of a tumor on his spinal cord. He had surgery on Nov. 31, 2011 to remove the tumor on his spine and immediately began a round of three different kinds of chemotherapy.

On Sept. 4, 2012, doctors discovered both of the tumors had begun progressing again and Norman was started on a third round of chemotherapy on Sept. 12.

"Right now we are hoping that these drugs stabilize the tumors," Nathan?s mother Dawn said. "He has another scan in November, so we are praying for stability."

Nathan and LC?s head baseball coach, Percy Abell, signed a letter of intent with two stipulations: He had to smile, and had to have fun.

On hand for the signing were Hornets? players, coaches and cheerleaders; his mother, his father Bobby, his brother Matthew and sisters Tabitha and Sarah.

The plan is for Nathan and his family to come to as practices and to as many games as they can. The players and coaches want to teach him and his siblings to play baseball, feel like a part of the team and get to experience what being part of the team means.

"Sarah, Matthew and Tabitha have been amazing," Dawn said. "They have been a support for him. Nathan gets so much of the attention and they have to be back in the background. The fact that the team and coaches have made a point to pay attention to them and get them involved means so much."

The Norman family and the baseball program were brought together by an organization called Team Impact that primarily operates out of the Northeast. This was the first pairing in Virginia.

"We were really excited to contact the Norman family, to get to know them and have them become a part of this program," Abell said. "We were very excited about getting to start a relationship with them and we want this to be a long-term relationship, to be a part of Nathan?s life for a long time."

Decked out in a Hornets? jersey, his favorite number (12) and an LC hat, Nathan took some questions, greeted the players, and took some photos after signing his letter of intent.

Though Nathan?s baseball experience has been limited to backyard play with his family, just like every other kid everywhere he wants to swing the bat.

"I like hitting," Nathan said.

Nathan also has already aced his first clubhouse politics test. When asked which Hornets? player was his favorite, Nathan said "All of them."

"The coaches have been so wonderful," Dawn said. "It has just been like one thing and now you are part of the team. They have been trying to get us involved in everything that we can be a part of and made us feel like a part of the team."

Program gives special ed kids chance to learn new skills

SHAWNEE, Kan. - Special education students at Trailridge Middle School in Shawnee get to take part in a program that teaches them some real-life skills.

The work experience program is designed to help students prepare for the vocational programs offered to them at high schools in the Shawnee Mission School District.

Every morning during first period, students stock the shelves in the cafeteria and prepare the kitchen for the lunch crowds. Teachers say the work helps students work on being on time, attitude and performance.

The program also serves as a platform for students to learn how to work under a direct supervisor. If the students do well, they get paid with food and a drink at the end of the week. ???

This is the program's second year.

Save Time And Money With Teleseminar Services | The Board ...

Teleseminar Services are an electronic alternative to attending a physical seminar. This approach to education, career development and information dissemination has numerous advantages. Some of these are listed below.

Advantages for Attendees:

- Transportation costs are eliminated. This is especially important when current gasoline prices are taken into consideration.

- Attendees do not need to pay as large a fee to attend. This is because they are only reserving a slot in a digital communications channel. Ordinarily, the attendee would be paying for his share of the conference room, catering and potentially a hotel room.

- Attendees can receive information and interact while working on other tasks. This is, to many people, more relaxing. It helps to save valuable work time, which could improve profits.

Advantages for Seminar Hosts:

- The cost of hosting a seminar is drastically reduced. It is not necessary to book a large venue such as a hotel conference room, catering is not needed and transportation costs for seminar staff are eliminated.

- Feedback can be more easily collected and reviewed at a later date. This is in contrast to attendees raising their hand to speak. Afterwards, this information would have to be manually recorded and reviewed. This is not only less efficient, it also introduces a great deal of potential for transcription and interpretation error.

Hardware and Software Required for Teleseminar Use

- A computer, tablet or high-end smart phone is typically required.

- Most teleseminar services are hosted on a service such as Skype, GoToMeeting or Google Plus. In the case of Google Plus and some specialized teleseminar software, support for the Adobe Flash format is vital. This is a feature only available on newer smart phones, such as those using ARM A8 and A9 Cortex processors. Most desktop and laptop computers are capable of running Flash content efficiently with just a simple software installation.

- An Internet connection such as Cable, DSL, Fiber or a T-Carrier line. Dial-up is not recommended. The best connection for teleseminar use provides at least 8 megabits of downlink bandwidth and at least 2 megabits of upstream bandwidth. Ideally, clients will be able to ?ping? to the server and back with a latency under 100 milliseconds.

Getting the Best Teleseminar Performance

An inadequately optimized computer or network connection can result in poor performance during a teleseminar. The following tips will help you to achieve higher frame rates, less compression artifacts and higher-quality audio sampling.

- End all unnecessary processes. These can put a detrimental burden on the CPU and system memory.

- Check network traffic in your operating system?s ?Resource Monitor?. The Network tab will allow you to view uplink and downlink traffic on a per-process basis. Custom software also exists to throttle back other applications? utilization of the Internet connection. By doing this, you will be able to maximize bandwidth available to the teleseminar software. Note that in some browsers, flash-based teleseminar interfaces will not show their CPU, memory and network utilization in the browser?s process itself. Instead, look for a daughter process with a name like ?Plugin-Container?. In the case of Java-based teleseminar software, look for a process with a name like ?JRE?, which stands for ?Java Runtime Environment?.

- Configure your teleseminar software to match your available Internet connection speed. You can approximate this by using an online speed test.

Iraq: Attacks kill 12, including schoolboy

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A 9-year-old schoolboy was among at least 12 people that insurgents killed across Iraq on Wednesday, rattling nerves ahead of a holiday weekend.

Violence has declined since the height of Iraq's insurgency, but the attacks once again showed that Sunni extremists seeking to undermine the Shiite-led government remain a lethal challenge to Iraq's security.

The child, Ahmed al-Obeidi, was killed when a parked motorcycle packed with explosives went off near a local politician's passing convoy in the northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk, according to police and a provincial council official. The boy and his brother were on their way to buy clothes for the holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins later this week.

Four other people were wounded in the attack. Politician Ali al-Hashemi, an ethnic Turkomen and the apparent target of the blast, escaped unharmed.

Kirkuk, about 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, is home to mix of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, all competing to control the city.

Authorities typically tighten security ahead of holidays, seeking to thwart attackers who take advantage of times when employees are off work and families gather in public places such as parks and restaurants. A wave of attacks shortly before another Muslim holiday in August, Eid al-Fitr, killed more than 90 people in one of the deadliest days in Iraq this year.

Members of the security forces ? favorite targets for insurgents ? were also among those killed Wednesday, according to police.

In Baghdad's western Mansour neighborhood, militants in a speeding car killed two soldiers at an Iraqi army checkpoint. A roadside bomb exploded shortly afterward as police headed to the scene, killing one policeman and wounding six people.

Shortly before dawn, a sniper shot and killed a police officer in the capital's eastern Mashtal neighborhood.

In the afternoon, gunmen ambushed a minibus carrying employees of a state-run car parts manufacturer in Mishada, north of Baghdad, killing four people and wounding two. Two other people were killed when gunmen sprayed their car with bullets near Baqouba, in central Iraq.

In Tuz Khormato, some 210 kilometers (130 miles) northeast of Baghdad, a roadside bomb struck a police patrol, killing a policeman and wounding three others.

Health officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information to reporters.

Also Wednesday, Supreme Judicial Council spokesman Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar said authorities have begun summoning employees of the central bank to give testimony as part of a probe into alleged financial wrongdoing. None has faced arrest.

The questioning follows the issuing of arrest warrants for 16 bank officials, including longtime governor Sinan al-Shabibi, a politically independent economist who has led the institution since 2003. The investigation, launched by a special parliamentary committee, has raised concerns of political interference in the bank.

On remarks posted on his official website Wednesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki denied that his administration was behind the investigation that led to the arrest warrants, seeking to quell allegations that the case is politically motivated.

Sudan rebels kill two in shelling: army

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudanese rebels killed two children and wounded eight other civilians when they shelled the main town in Sudan's oil-producing South Kordofan state on Tuesday, the army said - the third bout of shelling in the past two weeks.

Sudan's army has been fighting SPLM-North rebels in the state, which borders South Sudan, since June last year, shortly before South Sudan seceded. But the South Kordofan capital Kadugli was until recently kept out of the fighting.

Army spokesman al-Sawarmi Khalid told Reuters the rebels had shelled an army garrison outside Kadugli but that some shells had landed inside the town.

He said the attack led to the killing of two children, while eight other civilians were wounded, adding that the army had launched an operation a few days ago to "cleanse" the area around Kadugli of rebels.

SPLM-North spokesman Arnu Lodi said the rebels had shelled army positions inside Kadugli after coming under government artillery fire.

"The government and our troops have been shelling each other since this morning," Lodi said. "They have been shelling our forces based outside Kadugli from inside the town and we are shooting back in self-defense."

A resident who declined to be named said several shells had landed in the center of the city. "People are frightened," he said.

Events in Sudan's border states are hard to verify as the government bans foreign media from travelling there.

The rebels first shelled Kadugli on October 8. At least one rocket hit a U.N. compound, prompting the United Nations to move its staff out of the town.

Khartoum accuses South Sudan of backing the rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, who fought as part of the southern rebel army during Sudan's civil war, which ended in 2005. South Sudan denies the accusation.

Fighting in South Kordofan and nearby Blue Nile state has displaced or severely affected 900,000 people, the United Nations said on Friday. Sudan agreed in August to let aid into rebel-held areas but the United Nations has been unable to win government approval to go ahead with distributing food.

Under international pressure, Sudan and South Sudan agreed last month to establish a buffer zone along their border after clashing along it several times in the past year. Indirect talks between Khartoum and the rebels, however, have made scant progress.

The SPLM-North last year formed an alliance with rebels in the western region of Darfur with the aim of toppling Sudan's veteran president, Omar Hassan al-Bashir, but it is unclear how closely the groups coordinate.

(This story is corrected with toll in paragraphs 1 and 4 to two children dead, eight people wounded)

Dell begins accepting orders for its XPS 10 tablet running Windows RT, prices start at $499

Dell begins accepting orders for its XPS 10 tablet running Windows RT, prices start at $499

Surface isn't the only Windows RT tablet going on sale this week: Dell's XPS 10 ships on Friday, though it's actually for purchase now on Dell's site. The tablet starts at $500 for the 32GB tablet by itself, which is right in line with Microsoft's Surface pricing. The 64GB model is priced at $600. Interested in that optional keyboard dock? (Of course you are!) Dell is selling two bundles: one with the 32GB tablet for $680, and another with the 64GB one for $780. Though the keyboard comes at a premium, especially compared to Microsoft's Touch Covers, it offers some things Microsoft doesn't -- namely, a USB port, HDMI output and a built-in battery. Whichever model you choose, the XPS 10 has a 10.1-inch screen with 1,366 x 768 resolution and a dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. And, unlike some other Windows RT tablets, this one supports both finger and pen input. Hit up the source link for more info, and check out our fresh round of hands-on shots below.

Not just for kids: The most romantic Disney vacations offer grown-ups a place to play

6 hrs.

On a recent vacation, business manager Lauren O?Donnell?s boyfriend set the mood with a private boat ride. Fireworks lit up the sky, and he popped the question?at Disney World.

?I texted my friend to let him know I?m engaged,? says O?Donnell, who works at American Express Publishing, ?and learned he went to Disney for his one-year anniversary last year.?

Slideshow: See where the most romantic Disney vacations are

Grown-ups like to play at the Happiest Place on Earth, too, and romance has become big business for Disney. Over the past two decades, Disney World alone has hosted more than 45,000 weddings, and countless couples have vacationed at the company?s properties across the U.S.

?I think that Disney has this intangible magic that envelops people, if they allow it to,? says Deb Wills, whose Disney news and travel-planning site AllEars.net has a devoted following of 145,000 weekly subscribers. ?You can shut out the real world; you can suspend reality.?

But disappearing into that kind of theme-park love cocoon isn't always easy.

?Disney is Disney,? says Wills. ?There are lots and lots of families.? So start by going where the children aren't, such as a resort hotel during the daytime, when most guests are on the park rides. Or a cruise ship like the?Disney Wonder?and?Disney Magic,?on which couples? spa treatment rooms pair a massage with champagne on a veranda with sea views.

Inside the theme parks, privacy is catch-as-catch-can on little-walked trails and quiet culs-de-sac (ahem, try wandering to the back of Paradise Pier at California Adventure).

For a more guaranteed dose of romance, book a table at Be Our Guest restaurant, opening in?November at the newly expanded Fantasyland. It?s the first Magic Kingdom restaurant ever to serve wine and beer with dinner, and the d?cor is also creating buzz: a domed dining room with views of falling ?snow? that echo the ballroom scene from "Beauty and the Beast."

We've rounded up more couple-friendly Disney activities, each different in mood and expense. If you aren't swooning by the end, you may be better off at Six Flags.

(AP Photo/Evan Agostini, File)

(AP) ? A top recording executive testified Monday that he was Britney Spears' "lifeline" during the darkest days of her well-documented meltdown and never heard that she had a new manager named Sam Lutfi.

Barry Weiss, who headed Jive Records, the label on which Spears recorded, said his only contact from Lutfi in 2007-08 was when Weiss asked him for assurance that Spears would be on set to record a music video for her "Blackout" album.

"Britney was pretty erratic at the time," Weiss testified during trial in a defamation lawsuit brought by Lutfi against Spears' parents.

Lutfi claims he was Spears' personal manager and deserves millions as his share of her income during that period.

The defamation suit stems from the way Lutfi is depicted in a book written by Spears' mother that detailed the star's meltdown.

The trial took an early recess Monday and will resume Tuesday.

Conservators of Spears' estate, including her father, Jamie, who was in court, contend that Lutfi was never her manager but was simply a user who inserted himself into Spears' life and preyed on her vulnerabilities.

Weiss told of working closely with her former personal manager, Larry Rudolph, but said he was never told Lutfi had assumed the role.

"Sam Lutfi never introduced himself or came in for a meeting. He never discussed records or a record contract," Weiss said.

"He helped us get a video made," Weiss acknowledged. "He was trying to keep Britney on the set."

But in the end, Weiss said he saw Lutfi's role as a "gofer ... like a personal assistant."

Weiss said the singer would discuss with him the album's packaging, choice of a single record and creative matters normally discussed with a manager.

"There was no manager involved," Weiss said. "She was estranged from her family. I felt I was a lifeline for her. She was texting me constantly from her cellphone."

Weiss said that he had known Spears since she was 16 when he signed her for a contract with Jive Records.

"She's a superstar, a household name in every country in the world," Weiss said.

On cross-examination by Lutfi's attorney, Weiss said Spears' current contract requires one more album. Weiss said he has been in talks to persuade Spears to join him at his new label.

"It would be nice to be back together, if that happened," he said.

Microsoft Touch Mouse gets promised Windows 8 support, works like a Charm

Microsoft Touch Mouse hands-on

Microsoft vowed that its Touch Mouse would get Windows 8 support in time for the software's big release day, and it's being very true to its word by posting the relevant update with less than a week to go. Mouse and Keyboard Center 2.0 saves time for those not graced with a touchscreen by introducing multi-touch swipes that bring up Windows 8's Charm bar, switch between active apps and invoke Semantic Zoom. Will the Touch Mouse update trick you into thinking you have a Surface? No, but it's certainly much easier on the wallet.

Too Bad This Apple-Samsung Fanboy Peace Treaty Isn't Real

The smartphone fanboy wars seem both ridiculous and eternal. It's like everywhere you go on the Internet, a simple statement of preference—even one that isn't pig-head and disparaging—can serve as the flash point for a fanboy skirmish. Isn't it about time we signed a peace treaty? More »

Sunscreen recall: Banana Boat spray-ons can catch on fire

Sunscreen recall involves 23 Banana Boat spray-on products. Five burn incidents in the US and Canada spurred the Banana Boat sunscreen recall.

By Laurent Belsie,?Staff writer / October 20, 2012

A bottle of Banana Boat sunscreen is placed (by the photograph) in the sand near the Newport Beach pier in Newport Beach Calif., Friday, Oct. 19, 2012. The maker of Banana Boat sunscreen is recalling 23 of its spray-on products because they can catch on fire. Five reports of Banana Boat users being burned spurred the sunscreen recall.

In five known cases, people have been burned after using Banana Boat?UltraMist Sport SPF 30 and SPF 50 products, according to the maker of the product, Energizer Holdings. The company announced Friday it was removing 23 Banana Boat continuous sprays from retailers' store shelves.

Consumers who have any of the Banana Boat UltraMist products listed below should stop using them, the company warns. And, as the warning label states on all spray-on sunscreen products, consumers shouldn't apply them when smoking or near a flame or spark.

People who bought a Banana Boat UltraMist spray and have questions ? or want a refund ? should contact Energizer directly at 800-723-3786 between Monday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern time. Or they can send an e-mail to?SUNCARE@customerfollowup.info.

"This is not like a drug recall," a company spokesman says. "They don't need to send the bottles back."

Consumers of the product who have been burned should contact the US Food and Drug Administration directly online (?www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm) or by mail (MedWatch, FDA, 5600 Fishers Lane,?Rockville, MD? 20852-9787). You can get a postage-paid form for the FDA by going online to www.fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm.

The recall does not involve any Banana Boat sunscreen lotions. These don't have alcohol and other ingredients that are used in the spray-on products so they can flow more freely through the spray nozzle, a company spokesman says.?

All five burn incidents ? four in the United States and one in Canada ? have occurred within the past year, according to the spokesman. When the first report came in, the company began an internal investigation to figure out what was wrong. Energizer found that its spray mechanism was delivering more sunscreen than the industry standard, so it wasn't drying as quickly.

"Energizer believes it has identified the cause of this safety concern and expects to offer new Banana Boat continuous spray products shortly," the company said in a statement.

Here are the Banana Boat products that are being recalled:

Fans who have not gotten their fill of flappers, bootleggers and roaring '20s glitz and glamour from recent TV shows and movies like HBO?s ?Boardwalk Empire? and ?Lawless? can delve a little deeper into the Prohibition era at a new exhibit at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

At "American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition," which opens on Friday, visitors can find out about real-life legends like Al Capone, learn to dance the Charleston at a recreated speakeasy, join gangsters in a mock criminal lineup for a photo opportunity and play the role of a federal agent tracking down rumrunners from the seat of a speedboat in a custom video game.

Related: Homes where mobsters hid out

The exhibit was about three years in the making, said Stephanie Reyer, vice president of exhibitions for the Center.??We knew this was a good story,? she said. ?It captures the imagination of the American people,??covering everything from social change and popular culture, including music and clothing of the period, to important lessons in history about the temperance movement and how government works.

The 18th Amendment, which imposed the federal prohibition of alcohol, ?is essentially the only amendment ever passed that limited personal freedom,? aside from the 13th, which limited slave ownership, Reyer said.??And it?s the only amendment ever to be repealed.?

Prohibition was the period from 1920 to 1933 when there was a federal law forbidding?the making or selling of alcoholic beverages.

Daniel Okrent?the show?s curator and author of ?Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition,? the book that inspired ?American Spirits??said the exhibition highlights the impact of the American political process , which has affected everything from personal habits to tax policies, and also helps shed light on lesser-known luminaries of the era.

Wayne Wheeler, an attorney for the Anti-Saloon League?a lobbying organization?for Prohibition?used his political skill to influence the government. He was the Karl Rove of his day, ?the political genius that made it happen,? Okrent said.?And Mabel Walker Willebrandt, who served as assistant attorney general for eight years during Prohibition, ?was the best known woman in America at the time,? Okrent said, apart from actresses and singers. ?Now,? he said, ?nobody knows her.?

Displays will show why and how laws differ from state to state and how the idea of drinking responsibly has evolved since the 1930s. Some exhibits debunk myths, Reyer said, like one that allows visitors to sit in a?recreated pew from an early 1900s church to take a quiz to find out if they would have been ?wet? or ?dry? sympathizers. She said?people are often surprised to learn that many women during Prohibition would have voted ?dry,? as the suffrage movement?which worked to gain women's right to vote?was aligned with the temperance movement.

The exhibit will feature more than 120 rare artifacts, including: temperance propaganda; original ratification copies of the 18th and 21st Amendments; authentic barware; original home manufacturing items used for making moonshine, homebrewed beer and other liquor; the hatchet used by Carry Nation, a colorful member of the temperance movement, during a barroom-smashing raid; and the phone used by Roy Olmstead,?the defendant in a landmark wiretapping case,?to run his bootlegging empire.

?They are real-life artifacts that really draw you in and put you in the time period,? said Reyer. ?We've tried to make it playful, engaging and fun, [and] as accessible as possible. Every surface is a learning opportunity.?

Admission is $17.50 for adults, $16 for seniors and students, and $11 for children ages 4-12. The exhibit will run through April 28, 2013, after which it will tour a number of U.S. cities.

But stepping back in time does not end at the center?s exit.

Several bars and taverns that operated during the prohibition are in business today in the Philadelphia area, like the still family-owned McNally's Tavern?where a citation from a 1920s enforcement raid hangs by the door?and the Cherry Street Tavern that replaced its bar with a barber's chair during Prohibition.??But patrons were able to get more than a shave and a haircut,? according to The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, which lists Prohibition-era related activities on its website.

Visitors to the Eastern State Penitentiary can see Al Capone?s cell (complete with lavish paintings, polished desk and a high-end cabinet radio receiver), or stop by Betty's Speakeasy, a storefront and caf? where local beers and spirits are tucked into ?Bootleggers? cupcakes.

Google Launches YouTube Campaigns To Help Its 18K Nonprofit Partners Promote Their Goals

Screen Shot 2012-10-17 at 6.12.59 PMOver the years, YouTube has grown into way more than a place to upload cat videos. In a way, it's become a new breed of "television" that lets people interact with the things they care about. This could be music or even nonprofits. Some really amazing video campaigns for nonprofits have been hosted on YouTube, and today a really amazing feature has been released to support them. "YouTube Campaigns" allows nonprofits to set a campaign goal for their videos. For example, maybe you could do something where if your video hits 1M views, a company will donate a certain amount of money. The nonprofit can then turn to their supporters and ask them to spread the word.

Stronger dollar hurts McDonald's 3Q results

(AP) ? McDonald's third-quarter net income fell nearly 4 percent as the stronger dollar hurt international results and the chain faced tough competition in the U.S.

The world's largest hamburger chain with 33,000 locations worldwide has thrived in boom and bust times by selling cheap eats and constantly updating its menu. But global economic pressures and intensifying competition are wearing at the company, which does two-thirds of its business overseas.

CEO Don Thompson said Friday that those trends are likely to continue to pressure its revenue and net income results in the near term. He said revenue in stores open at least 13 months, a key restaurant metric, is trending negative so far in October.

Shares fell $2.97, or 3.2 percent, to $89.89 in premarket trading. The stock is down 7 percent since the beginning of the year.

McDonald's said Friday its net income fell to $1.46 billion, or $1.43 per share. That compares with net income of $1.51 billion, or $1.45 per share last year. Analysts expected net income of $1.47 per share, according to Fact Set.

The stronger dollar hurt net income by 8 cents per share. When the dollar is strong, international sales translate into fewer dollars back at home.

Revenue was nearly flat at $7.15 billion from $7.17 billion last year. Analysts expected revenue of $7.17 billion.

Revenue in stores open at least 13 months rose 1.9 percent globally, including a 1.2 percent rise in the U.S., where the company said it faced "broad competitive activity."

McDonald's is facing stiffer competition from newer chains like Panera Bread Co., which offers higher-end food in a fast casual atmosphere. Long-time rivals such as Wendy's Inc. and Burger King Worldwide Inc. are also reworking their menus, renovating restaurants and launching new ad campaigns to win back customers.

In Europe, where McDonald's does 40 percent of its business, revenue in stores open at least 13 months rose 1.8 percent, hurt by negative guest traffic.

In Asia/Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, the measure rose 1.4 percent as the company promoted limited-time offers and traffic increased.

Janney Capital Markets analyst Mark Kalinowski said he expects tougher comparisons with a year ago will weigh on sales trends and lowered his estimates on McDonald's for the current fiscal year as well as fiscal 2013 and 2014. He kept his "Neutral" rating on the stock.

"We would not be buyers in the context of tougher year-over-year comparisons in the U.S. to be lapped over October through May," he wrote in a client note.

Take control: Exploring how self-discipline works and how we might boost it

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? Converging scientific evidence -- not to mention a great deal of life experience -- tells us that self-control is an important ability. It helps us keep our cool, get things done, and resist the things that tempt us. Scientists believe that gaining a clearer understanding of how self-control works could provide critical insights into addressing some of the large-scale problems facing society today, including obesity and addiction.

Numerous studies have found evidence for the idea of self-control as a limited resource, but emerging research suggests that this model may not tell the whole story. Research published in the journals of the Association for Psychological Science explores the various mechanisms -- metabolic, cognitive, motivational, affective -- thought to underlie self-control.

Motivational Versus Metabolic Effects of Carbohydrates on Self-Control

Daniel C. Molden, Chin Ming Hui, Abigail A. Scholer, Brian P. Meier, Eric E. Noreen, Paul R. D'Agostino, and Valerie Martin

We usually think of a sugary treat as something that taxes our self-control because we have to expend effort trying to resist it. But what if sweets could actually help to boost self-control? That's the basic gist behind the energy model of self-control. According to this model, self-control relies on carbohydrate metabolism; we deplete our carbohydrate stores as we exert self-control, making it more difficult to exert self-control until the stores are built up again. Psychological scientist Daniel Molden and his colleagues decided to test the energy model in a series of four experiments in which participants' baseline glucose levels were assessed prior to performing tasks that required self-control. The researchers found no evidence for a relationship between self-control and glucose metabolism. Follow-up studies indicated that participants who rinsed their mouths with a carbohydrate solution showed improved self-control, despite the fact that they didn't ingest the solution and there was no observable change in their blood glucose levels. These findings suggest a motivational as opposed to metabolic mechanism for self-control.

The Gargle Effect: Rinsing the Mouth with Glucose Enhances Self-Control

Matthew A. Sanders, Steve D. Shirk, Chris J. Burgin, Leonard L. Martin

In this article, psychological scientist Matthew Sanders and colleagues aim to clarify the debate over whether metabolic or motivational mechanisms underlie self-control. The researchers asked participants to engage in a task that required self-control; the participants then rinsed their mouths with either glucose or a non-glucose sweetener while they performed a second self-control task. The results of the study conceptually replicate those reported by Molden and colleagues. Participants who rinsed with the glucose sweetener demonstrated better self-control than those who rinsed with a non-glucose sweetener, despite the fact that there was not enough time for the glucose to actually be metabolized. These results provide additional evidence to suggest that glucose influences self-control through a non-metabolic route. The researchers speculate that glucose may activate brain areas involved in selecting and inhibiting action, as well as detecting errors and evaluating competing responses.

What Is Ego Depletion? Toward a Mechanistic Revision of the Resource Model of Self-Control

Michael Inzlicht and Brandon J. Schmeichel

Although self-control has traditionally been thought of as a limited resource that can be depleted, research on cognition, motivation, and affect has begun to challenge this picture. Inzlicht and Schmeichel review the existing research on self-control and propose an alternative model of self-control focused on process. This process model holds that our initial exertions of willpower lead our motivation to shift away from control and toward gratification. As a part of this process, our attention shifts away from cues that signal the need for control and toward cues that signal indulgence. Inzlicht and Schmeichel argue that the process model provides a starting point for understanding self-control and that more research examining these cognitive, motivational, and affective influences on self-control is needed.

The Outdoor Project is complete!- interior design, decorating and ...

Sponsored by Nuffnang and Masters Home Improvement
After weeks of hard labour, our outdoor space is complete! Read on to see more...

When I accepted the task of transforming a space in our home on a budget I knew this would call for a challenge and, together with David, we committed to building a new outdoor space.

Here is what the space looked like before:

The original grassy space beside the house was in need of a makeover.

It was an area that was relatively unused and simply gathered leaves.

Short of kicking a ball around here we didn?t use it for much else.

We set about to build a paved area and a pergola from scratch using raw materials from Masters to create a space that we could relax and entertain friends in using existing outdoor furniture.

David and I designed the outdoor space and it turned out as we imaged it with a few minor changes ? such as extending the pergola outwards to have more space while still being able to use the existing lengths of timber we purchased.

The materials for the pergola and paving came in at less than $1000 and this left us with money to spare for plants.

I already had some leftover paint from previous projects and the main additional cost to us was the hiring of a compactor to compress the soil in the paved area.

We spent our last few weekends drilling / sawing / sanding / nailing / cleaning and clearing rubbish / reassessing the design / researching / making further visits to Masters for last minute products / painting (well into the evening) / planting and we got there in the end!

Four weeks from when the first pergola post was set into the ground we have a completed space.?And I must say a huge thank David for the amazing job he did of the pergola and the space.

Lifestyle shows can sometimes make it look easy to build structures such as these but it definitely takes more than one person to tackle such a job and when the person helping you (me) is of very little use in lifting heavy things the job becomes extra hard.

These photographs were taken over two weekends and as you can see the space has changed slightly as more plants have been added.

I imagine it will ?settle? into the space a little more over the next few weeks and over time it won?t look so shiny and new which will look lovely.

The other weekend David and I went to the Grand Designs Live event in Sydney.

David proudly showed a few people in the garden and landscaping exhibition stands the new space, including Jamie Durie!

Jamie was lovely and gave us advice on plants to fill the area and add colour, including lilly pillies and port wine magnolias.

We?ve yet to pick up some magnolias but we did buy lilly pillies, lemon trees, azaleas, hydrangeas, wisterias and palms.

I wrote about my experience trying to fit some of these plants into the back of my Mini?during one shopping trip.

In the end, we managed to turn the unused area of the garden into a fresh outdoor living space, consisting of a paved area, a planter section, partitioned by white picket fencing, under the canopy of the painted pergola.

What I love most is that the space will change over time.

I am hoping the wisterias will grow to cover the pergola and the lemon trees will give us fruit and we can plant flowers and herbs and vegetables in the hanging pots.

We also have plans to add lighting and outdoor heating for the cooler months.

Overall the experience was fun and a lot of hard work but we now have a beautiful space to enjoy.

THANK YOU to Masters for the opportunity to work on this project and also to David for all his help ? and bring on the summer parties!

Microsoft sells out of $499 Surface tablets (but you can still pre-order)

4 hrs.

Microsoft has only?been letting people pre-order the new Surface RT tablet since Wednesday, but the most popular configuration ? the entry-level $499 one ? appears to be sold out?already.

Now, if you attempt to pre-order the baseline Surface with Windows RT, a 32 GB device without the new Touch Cover accessory, you'll have to wait about three weeks for it to ship, according to Microsoft's website.?

Oddly enough, if you choose to buy the same model with a bundled keyboard Touch Cover (the?one whose ease of use came as "a pleasant surprise" to?our own Wilson Rothman), you can still get it on the original ship?date of Oct. 26.?Entry-level configurations ordered before the change to the delivery timeframe should ship on time.

We've reached out to Microsoft for comment on this shipment delay, of course. We'd certainly?love to know how many Surface RT tablets have been pre-ordered total?so far, especially considering that the company is rumored to have ordered enough parts to make three to five million Surface tablets in this quarter alone.

Group: Libya militias 'executed' Gadhafi loyalists

CAIRO (AP) ? Libyan rebels appear to have "summarily executed" scores of fighters loyal to Moammar Gadhafi, and probably the dictator himself, when they overran his hometown a year ago, a human rights group said Wednesday.

The report by Human Rights Watch on alleged rebel abuses that followed the October 2011 capture of the city of Sirte in the final major battle of the eight-month civil war is one of the most detailed descriptions of what the group says were war crimes committed by the militias that toppled Gadhafi, and which still play a major role in Libyan politics today.

The 50-page report, titled "Death of a Dictator: Bloody Vengeance in Sirte," details the last hours of Gadhafi's life on Oct. 20, 2011, when he tried to flee the besieged city. The longtime leader's convoy was struck by NATO aircraft as it tried to escape and the survivors were attacked by militias from the city of Misrata, who captured and disarmed the dictator and his entourage.

Misrata was subjected to a brutal weeks-long siege by Gadhafi's forces that killed hundreds of residents, and fighters from the city became among the regime's most implacable foes. HRW says it seems the Misratans took revenge against their prisoners in Sirte.

"The evidence suggests that opposition militias summarily executed at least 66 captured members of Gadhafi's convoy in Sirte," said Peter Bouckaert, emergencies director at Human Rights Watch.

The New York-based group's report says that new evidence unearthed in its investigation includes a mobile phone video clip taken by militiamen showing a large number of prisoners from Gadhafi's convoy being cursed and abused by rebels.

The remains of least 17 of the detainees in the phone video were later identified in a group of 50 bodies found at Sirte's Mahari hotel, some still with their hands tied behind their back. Human Rights Watch said it used hospital morgue photos to confirm the victims' identities.

The dictator himself was seen alive in a widely-circulated video made public shortly after the battle.

"Video footage shows that Moammar Gadhafi was captured alive but bleeding heavily from a head wound," the HRW report says. But footage showed that he was "severely beaten by opposition forces, stabbed with bayonet in his buttocks, causing more injuries, and bleeding. By the time he is filmed being loaded into an ambulance half-naked, he appears lifeless."

Bouckaert said the group's "findings call into question the assertion by Libyan authorities that Moammar Gadhafi was killed in crossfire and not after his capture."

Gadhafi's son Muatassim was also videotaped alive and in captivity, only to have his body turn up at a morgue in Misrata alongside his father's.

"In case after case we investigated, the individuals had been videotaped alive by the opposition fighters who held them and then found dead hours later," Bouckaert said. "Our strongest evidence for these executions comes from the footage filmed by the opposition forces and the physical evidence at the Mahari hotel where the 66 bodies were found."

Another victim cited by HRW as an example was 29-year-old Ahmed al-Gharyani, a navy recruit from the town of Tawergha. He was seen alive in the phone video as rebels beat him. His body was later found in the hotel and eventually identified by his family.

His hometown, Tawergha, was used as a staging ground by Gadhafi's forces to launch attacks on Misrata, but after rebels broke the siege on Misrata and overran Tawergha, the town's residents fled or were driven out by vengeful rebels.

Suleiman al-Fortia, a member of the dissolved National Transitional Council from Misrata, denied that Gadhafi or his loyalists were executed. "We hoped to arrest Gadhafi alive (to try him). All the killings took place in a crossfire," he said.

But HRW said that "under the laws of war, the killing of captured combatants is a war crime, and Libyan civilian and military authorities have an obligation to investigate war crimes and other violations of international humanitarian law."

The group released its report days before Libya celebrates "liberation day," the anniversary of Sirte's fall on Oct. 23. Since then, the country's new leaders have heavily depended on former rebel militias to secure cities and protect borders in the absence of a strong national army or other government security forces.

Calls for militias to be brought under the control of the defense or interior ministries have met resistance from some fighters.

Meanwhile, some groups have been implicated in revenge attacks and communal strife, while members of one Islamist militia have been accused of taking part in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in the eastern city Benghazi on Sept. 11 that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens.

In the aftermath of Stevens' death, popular resentment surged and thousands took to the streets of Benghazi demanding the dismantlement of the militias. The government has taken over some militia headquarters and appointed military officers to run the groups, and designated some "outlawed" and others "tolerated."

Mark Millar Talks Fox's Marvel Universe

20th Century Fox Marvel Movie Universe

As Marvel Studios ventures forth, growing their interconnected comic book film universe, and Marvel Comics prepares to relaunch many of their main ongoing books, Twentieth Century Fox hopes to successfully implement something equally as ambitious with their own Marvel films.

To do this, they?ve enlisted the help of Mark Millar, the brain behind several major Marvel Comics events and series. And as suspected, he will aid Fox in pushing forward towards an interconnected, ?cohesive? Marvel cinematic universe of their own.

The official announcement regarding Millar?s signing with Fox was made two weeks ago, detailing the comic creator?s position as ?creative consultant on the studio?s upcoming projects based on Marvel Comics properties.? To us, this was immediately?reminiscent of Joss Whedon?s recent three-year exclusive deal with Marvel Studios where he will help organize their upcoming films leading up to?The Avengers 2, which he will write and direct. Fox now had their own overseer of sorts who could potentially help not only Bryan Singer in fleshing out the X-Men universe into something bigger, but have those movies share the same space as?Fantastic Four, a property they?re rebooting with Josh Trank (Chronicle).

X-Men - Fantastic Four Crossover Movie

As it turns out, that?s exactly the case. In chatting with?SFX, Mark Millar teased Fox?s big picture plans:

?Fox have said that they want to build a cohesive universe and I?d personally like this to work in?complement?to the Marvel one. It would be cool if these universes didn?t contradict each other so if you went to see Spidey, The Avengers, the X-Men, etc, as a viewer you would have no idea that all three are coming from different studios. I?d love to make it look like they?re all just happening in one place.

?I don?t think it?s something anyone would want to rush into. Following that Marvel model, we want to establish things first. If you had a Fantastic Four relaunch, and Wolverine and the X-Men were in it, I think it would distract you from the Fantastic Four. You can make people aware that they?re existing in the same universe without making it a big crossover movie but it would be an injustice to the Fantastic Four not to make their first movie all about them.?

We already know? The Wolverine is distancing itself from?X-Men Origins: Wolverine in that it?s more of a standalone story than a sequel. From Millar?s words,?Fantastic Four is similarly attempting to stand on its own two feet before they rush into crossing all of the characters together. Daredevil, as of last week, is now back with Marvel and therefore doesn?t fit into the equation.

X-Men First Class Days of Future Past Header

The most interesting bit is how Millar specifically uses the word ?compliment? in describing how Fox?s Marvel cinematic universe can exist alongside Disney-Marvel?s Avengers-headlined one. With each studio owning the rights to different sets of characters, there can be no crossover between the live-action?Avengers and?X-Men, even if they all find themselves in New York at a given time. Although, if the studios can come to some sort of agreement, like Sony and Marvel almost did by having a reference to The Amazing Spider-Man in The Avengers, perhaps there can be minor nods and Easter Eggs back-and-forth, to at least reference major events.

This sentiment was also shared by X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner who didn?t hesitate in expressing her love of the idea of having the X-Men and?The Avengers crossover one day. That?s not going to happen, but with? The Amazing Spider-Man?and?Fantastic Four both starting anew, and?X-Men potentially reshaping itself with Bryan Singer and Matthew Vaughn?s time travel tale?X-Men: Days of Future Past, this would be the opportune time to start paying tribute to each franchise?s respective continuities. Then again, this arguably wouldn?t serve to benefit Marvel Studios since they couldn?t use these other superheroes to fight global threats, where they would in the books.

If you missed it, head to page 2 to read the letter Mark Millar wrote to his fans about the new gig after it was announced.

In other news, my oral exam went really, really well and I did great. I got about the highest marks that I have ever got for talking! Of course I had been worrying myself to death over nothing?
I was just really glad that I could sit down for the exam, because I had given myself such a stomach ache from stress (like I always do) that I wouldn?t have wanted to stand up. :P

Also, I really don?t even have an excuse for the late post. But I?ll try: I was procrastinating 60% this weekend, I forgot that I hadn?t a finished drawing yet for 40% and I fell asleep when I tried to do something about this last night for 20%. Oh no, wait. That 120%. Let?s try again: I procrastinated 50%, forgot 40% and fell asleep (or just decided to go to bed) 10%. That sounds sufficient. ;) A nice, statistical way of saying nothing at all?

At the moment, I?m lying flat on my back on my bed with the laptop on my stomach, nursing a headache. It aches from my nose, through my eye, in a line across my head and down my neck at the back. Urghhhh? Also, I have a huge analytical essay to hand in on Friday and I haven?t written a single word yet. And not a single word will get written tonight either, if I know myself. I?m just going to go to sleep again. Well, maybe I can make an attempt to read my research material in bed, to make myself feel less guilty about not working.

[Harry] did not usually lie in bed reading his textbooks; that sort of behaviour, as Ron rightly said, was indecent in anybody except Hermione, who was simply weird that way.

I?m going to try to publish a book review next week, so see you then!
