Phish frontman says Tony nom impressed daughters

NEW YORK (AP) ? While Phish frontman Trey Anastasio has a highly devout fan base, it takes a little more to impress his teenage daughters. But that changed when he was nominated this season for a Tony Award.

"They were completely unimpressed with the rock thing. Not impressed at all. This was huge for them," the 48-year-old Phish frontman said Sunday on the red carpet at Radio City Music Hall before going into the Tonys.

Anastasio, and wife, Susan, say their daughters Eliza and Isabella are huge musical theater fans.

He composed the music to the defunct Broadway musical, "Hands on a Hardbody." Though the show closed before the Tony nominations, it was honored with three nods, including one for Anastasio's original score.

The musician has only positive feelings for the show.

"I'm just overwhelmed by all of it," Anastasio said. "We're hearing that the show might run regionally in certain places, so we're thrilled about that."

He laughed when told some Phish fans were happy that the show closed so he would stick to playing live.

"So they were glad the show closed?" he asked. "I am excited to get on tour, if I'm speaking to the Phish fans. I can't wait."

Anastasio says the band will play some of the songs from the musical at Phish shows.

"There's a lot of great songs. I'm not sure what will make that leap at this time," Anastasio said.

When asked if his daughters say their dad is Trey Anastasio when getting autographs, he joked: "Broadway composer. Trey Anastasio, Broadway composer."
