Basit Ali slams Ijaz Butt?s controversial statement ? Cricket News Update

Basit Ali, the former Test cricketer, has slammed Ijaz Butt, the former Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), for giving a controversial statement about the disunity of the national team and said that Butt?s tenure as the head the board is a dark period of Pakistan cricket.

The ex-Chairman, who is also a former Test cricketer, recently claimed that Misbah-ul-Haq, the country?s Test and One Day International (ODI) skipper, is not having good relations with the coach, Dav Whatmore and Mohammad Hafeez, the T20 captain.

Misbah and Hafeez have categorically denied the claims of the former chief the PCB and both are currently representing Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) in the President?s One-Day Trophy 2012-13.

Basit, who is the coach of SNGPL, criticised Butt and expressed that there are some forces which are working to hamper Pakistan?s growth in international cricket.

?I think there are some quarters who are trying to promote their vested interest with such baseless statements and to cause confusion,? he expressed.

There were rumours about a rift between Misbah and Hafeez during the recently concluded tour of South Africa as well and the duo has denied all such reports a number of times. Interestingly, according to the close quarters of the national team, these two right-handed batsmen are considered to be best friends.

The former middle-order batsman from Karachi further added that Butt possesses no right to comment on the national team because his tenure in the board led to a number of controversies, including the spot-fixing incident, which could have been handled more appropriately.

?During Ijaz?s regime Pakistan suffered a lot across the globe due to spot fixing scandal and still its sour memories are following our cricket and it was the most unfortunate incident of our cricket,? said the former Test cricketer.

Pakistan?s next assignment in international cricket is the tour of Ireland and Scotland before the Green Shirts take part in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013, which is going to be played in June in England. Misbah, despite being 38-year-old, has been retained as the ODI captain; whereas, Hafeez is likely to be his deputy on the tour.
